Presentation Summary: Can Fashion Exist Without Waste? explores the environmental impact of the fashion industry while examining more sustainable and conscious approaches to design. Drawing from personal experiences in fashion and observations of climate change, this presentation invites dialogue around textile waste, overconsumption, and how fashion can move toward a more thoughtful and environmentally responsible future.
Bio: Krisha Gotami is a fashion designer and an entrepreneur. She holds a Master’s degree in Fashion Design from Milan, Italy, and an MBA in Entrepreneurship from the United States.
Her purpose became clear when she witnessed the immense amount of textile waste generated within the fashion industry. Working with various design houses and companies made her realize how deeply unsustainable the system had become. It reminded her of a childhood memory – visiting a tailor’s shop and collecting leftover fabric scraps, which her mother lovingly turned into dresses for her dolls. Those tiny dresses meant more to her than anything store-bought. She didn’t know it then, but she was giving those fabrics a second life. That innocent memory became the foundation of her mission today – to create fashion that respects both beauty and the planet. The truth is, the fashion industry is one of the world’s largest polluters, responsible for nearly 10% of global carbon emissions and generating approximately 92 million tons of textile waste annually.
To address this problem, she is currently building a sustainable luxury fashion brand committed to reducing textile waste through the use of biodegradable, recycled, and deadstock fabrics. Her work explores the intersection of fashion, environmental responsibility, and material innovation, with a focus on circular design, conscious consumption, and timeless design practices.
