WORKSHOPS
June 25

On the Wing: Mississippi Flyway
Eagle Point Park – Riverfront Pavilion | June 25 | 6 – 9 PM
National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium | June 26 | 2 – 5 PM
Instructor – Jessica Turtle
Flyways are like highways in the sky—routes that large numbers of birds follow during migration. In North America, mountain ranges, coastlines, and the Mississippi River all run mostly north to south. These natural features form four major flyways that migrating birds use as guides.
Using reference guides and citizen science apps, participants will be asked to observe, listen to, track, and identify a bird and a fun fact about it in the surrounding area. Once they’ve properly identified the bird, they will work with lead artist Jessica Turtle to create a watercolor likeness of their bird as part of a large-scale community collage representing the Mississippi Flyway—North America’s largest migratory route. Workshop is free. All Ages

EB Lyons Interpretive Center – June 26 | 10 am – noon
In this outdoor sketching/art workshop, choose from two options for gathering clues from plants or animals, and exploring their relationships with each other, us, and their surroundings: 1) Delve into plant secrets by sketching with traditional materials and techniques; or 2) Arrange gathered natural materials (twigs, leaves, stones) in 2- or 3-dimensional patterns.
Project Art for Nature (PAN) artists will guide these practices in the Mines of Spain conservation area. Open to all experience levels, whether you’ve never made art or are an experienced artist. Ages 13 and older. Workshop is free – registration encouraged but not required.
