Ice Terrain: An Exercise in Mimesis and Preservation
June 16 | Dubuque Museum of Art
About the Work:
(Project lead by Derek Kiesling)
A cast ice sculpture is preserved in a custom display freezer. The form of the ice sculpture is digitally generated through artist defined algorithms and subjected to simulated erosion. Its goal is to appear simultaneously natural and uncanny. At the end of its display period, the ice sculpture will be placed outdoors and allowed to melt with little trace of its original form. Human defined forms of naturalism and a desire for control are on full display in this futile gesture.
