On The Wing: Mississippi Flyway
June 25 | Eagle Point Park | 6 – 9 PM
June 26 | National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium | 2 – 5 PM
Jessica Turtle: Instructor, Founder of Treehaus Studio
Workshop Summary: Flyways are like highways in the sky—routes that large numbers of birds follow during migration. In North America, mountain ranges, coastlines, and the Mississippi River all run mostly north to south. These natural features form four major flyways that migrating birds use as guides.
Using reference guides and citizen science apps, participants will be asked to observe, listen to, track, and identify a bird and a fun fact about it in the surrounding area. Once they’ve properly identified the bird, they will work with lead artist Jessica Turtle to create a watercolor likeness of their bird as part of a large-scale community collage representing the Mississippi Flyway—North America’s largest migratory route.
